Did you know that today, March 20th, is International Day of Happiness? Nope, neither did I. But now I do. And I suppose, since you’re reading this, so do you!

Sometimes it’s all too easy to dwell on what makes you unhappy. And that’s OK. We try to identify negativity to avoid negativity. We try to analyse what prompts those feelings of sadness, hopelessness, inadequacy, in order to know how to remove them from our lives. This is a good thing. But maybe today we can flip that and think about what makes us happy, hopeful, strong.

Here are some things that make me happy…

 

Sunshine. Blue skies. Rainbows. Drizzle on a summer’s day. Making pictures from clouds. Tracing lines left by planes. The sky on a warm day. The sky on a cold day. The sky.

Sand between my toes. The ocean. The beach in summertime. The beach in winter with gales and roaring waves. White sea horses and mermaids. The coast. The sea. The sea.

Coffee. Coffee in the morning after a sleepless night. Coffee at 3pm during a long day. Hot chocolate with marshmallows and cinnamon. Tea. Milk, two sugars. Peppermint. Fresh mint. Camomile and honey. Hot chocolate in bed at 10pm after a long day. Hot chocolate made with almond milk and cacao and maple syrup. Hot chocolate in a mug it takes to hands to hold. 

Cake. Cookies. Ice cream made from cashew nuts. Cupcakes with buttercream and sprinkles. A slice of happiness on a plate with a fork. Menus with more than one item to choose. Baking cakes. Baking cookies. Baking macarons. Baking birthday treats and Saturday treats and Sunday treats and every-day-of-the-week treats for people whose smile makes me smile. Cookie and ice cream sandwiches. And waffles. And pancakes. With friends 
(and maple syrup).

Growing things. Tulips from Amsterdam, transported in cardboard. Cabbages from seed. Making things. A needle and thread. A crochet hook. A blank page and a pen. Something out of nothing.

People. Family. Friends. The one who brings you your favourite sweets after a long day. The one who tells you you’re beautiful after a sleepless night. The ones who hug you, hold you and keep your happy safe for you if it gets lost for a little while. The pupster.

What makes you happy? Do more of it today, and the next day, and the next day. Don’t settle for just one day of happiness. Make it your year of happiness.
