Byron Bay is a beautiful coastal town in New South Wales and the place to go for a beach weekend in Australia. With its laid-back atmosphere, stunning beaches and friendly locals, there’s no wonder it’s such a popular destination with Australians as well as visitors from the world over. There are countless things to do in Byron Bay, whether you have weeks or mere days there. If you find yourself with just a weekend to enjoy Byron Bay, here are a few of the best ways to spend your time and money. You’ll fall in love with this place and no doubt be back before you know it!
Here are four of the best things to do in Byron Bay in a weekend…
Visit the Beachside Market
If you find yourself in Byron Bay on the right Saturday, head to the Beachside Market. Beginning just off Main Beach by the Surf Life Saving Club, the market stretches for what seems like miles. Here, you’ll find local artisans selling unique gifts, from soap to jewellery to clothes, food and everything in between. The market runs just four times a year, in early January, at Easter, in mid-July and then for the final time each year in late September. They have a focus on sustainability, so you’ll find that each and every item sold is authentic and sustainable, often made locally and usually one-of-a-kind. You don’t have to be a shopaholic for a stroll through the Beachside Market to be one of the best things to do in Byron Bay!
Walk to the Lighthouse and Take In the Amazing Views
Even if you’re not a fitness addict, walking to the lighthouse that watches over the bay is still one of the best things to do in Byron Bay. If you begin the walk at Main Beach, you’ll be able to wander along the beach for the first part of your walk and feel the sand between your toes. After that, the trek gets a little steep – but it’s worth it! On the hour-long walk to the lighthouse, you’ll be treated to the most awe-inspiring views. You’ll also pass the most easterly point of the Australian mainland along the way. If you’re travelling between May and October, keep an eye out for whales; during their annual migration you might just spot them playing in the ocean!
Ride a Horse along the Beach
If you’re willing to spend a little, then riding a horse along the beach really is one of the best things to do in Byron Bay. You’ll have to go out of the main town to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience, but Brunswick Heads is just a short bus-ride away – and gives you the opportunity to explore another small Australian town while you’re at it. For an hour or two, you’ll enjoy the sea, sand and sunshine from a horse’s saddle – a freedom like no other. The Ranch at Byron Bay offers this wonderful experience and their hour-long ride is suitable for beginners, so you don’t have to be an expert horse wrangler to get involved. Find out more and book your ride with The Ranch here.
Watch the Sunset over the Ocean
Whether you’re a photographer, a nature enthusiast, a surfer or just after some peace and quiet at the end of a long day, watching the sun set over the ocean is one of the best things to do in Byron Bay. You can watch the day end from anywhere along the bay and you won’t be disappointed with the view, but sitting on the rocks just off Main Beach is the most popular place. There you’ll find everyone from families to backpackers, smokers and drinkers, amateur photographers and guitar players, all there to see a beautiful sunset in a beautiful place. If you’re an early bird, why not set your alarm and head to the beach early to see the sunrise over the ocean too?
